Because they mean the world to us

Capturing the Bond Between Horse + Rider

Equus Photo Florida evokes emotion, connection, and story-telling into every unique Horse + Rider session. As a lifetime equestrian myself, I know how deeply the bond between a rider and her horse runs.  A horse is our best friend, our therapist, our salvation and our sanity; they are velvet muzzles, soft eyes and gentle nickers. Horses carry us faithfully whether soaring over jumps, dancing across arenas, racing against time or standing head to heart with us in their pastures. The bond goes beyond the physical where words simply will not suffice – this is what I capture during your session.

About Your Photographer

Hi, I’m Jennifer and I’m so glad you stopped by! I’ve been an avid equestrienne since the age of two when my aunt placed me on the back of the horse she used to ride named Dusty. I spent my weekends and childhood summers at the barn lessoning, pitching in with barn chores, hacking around bareback and napping with the foals in the pasture during lunchtime. These days I enjoy spending time with my heart horse, American Hero, an Oldenburg/Trakehner cross.

FAQs

Horse + Rider

How long is my session?

Your session is an hour long, starting at the agreed start time.

What if I am running late?

Please plan ample time before your session to make sure everything is ready to go. Adding extra time compared to your normal grooming time is always helpful!

What do I do if my horse is misbehaving?

I encourage clients to lunge or ride their horse before the session to release extra energy. If they get nervous easily, giving Perfect Prep 20-30 minute before the session starts typically helps and doesn’t make their eyes look droopy. With any calming supplements, it is best to consult with USEF to make sure they are legal if you plan on competing.

What happens if it rains?

Do not worry! Each session has 3 built-in reschedules for this purpose. However, I have shot in a drizzle and overcast images have been some of my favorites.

What time are these sessions held?

For Horse + Rider, I try to shoot them 30 minutes before sunrise or 1.5 hours before sunset. This is when the light is the most gorgeous. Don’t worry though, I can shoot these sessions at other times and will find the best lighting on your property!

Should I have hair and make up done?

It’s personal preference, but I recommend using a professional if you aren’t comfortable doing it yourself.

How many outfits can I have?

For the 2 hour session, 3-4 outfits work without rushing. More than that tends to waste valuable shooting time.

What if we exceed the allotted amount of time?

I normally shoot until I feel I have captured everything I need to have a complete gallery for you. I always allow a time buffer in-between sessions in case there is an issue during the session and it runs over.

Do I need to bring anyone with me?

Yes! It is highly recommended you bring someone with you to your session. It will make things run smoothly. This person can help with the horse or with any clothing issues. Plus having a familiar face around will help you feel more relaxed.

I’m worried I’ll look stiff or uncomfortable in my photos, how will I know what to do?

You will find during my session I will have you petting and interacting with your horse a lot. Not only does this help me capture genuine moments between you two, but also helps you both relax. I will direct you how to stand with your horse and will do different poses with horse interaction. I do not have your stare at my camera for 60 minutes straight.

How should I prepare my horse?

Your horse should be squeaky clean with bright whites and no mud or stains. This is an investment and you want your horse to look their best.

Halter or Bridle or Nothing?

This is a personal preference, but we can do either. I do ask you to have a leather lead shank with chain. This is not used to control your horse, the chain is easier to edit out in post session processing. If you choose to use a bridle or halter, make sure it is clean and oiled. If you prefer a naked face, a bailing twine halter will be made: it’s easy to edit out and allows control of the horse.

Should I braid?

I personally love how horses look when neatly braided, but long, flowy manes were meant to have the spotlight, too!

Where do you take the pictures?

Black background sessions can be achieved two different ways. If you choose the studio lighting look, we will do those in a large barn aisle or indoor. Natural light sessions are accomplished in the doorway of the barn aisle or indoor.

Should I Bring Someone?

Yes! It is always a good idea to have someone with you to help. During the session I will need someone to hold the horse and another to get the horse’s attention. I can not guarantee I will have an assistant with me for each session.

Any tools I should have at the session?

Yes!
-Towel to wipe their muzzle
-Lead Shank with Chain
-Hoof polish: clear or black
-Horse’s favorite treats
-Things that normally get your horse’s attention
